Shoot What You Eat & Eat What You Shoot!

After getting caught up in all this wedding business, it’s easy to forget one of my very first favorite photography subjects:
Consider why food photography is such an appealing genre:
- Your subject does not move, nor blink.
- Everyone can relate to food.
- Food is often colorful and arranged nicely.
- You are rewarded immediately after the shoot.
What you need:
- Good Looking Food
Unless shooting in a dimly lit restaurant, Point-and-Shoot Cameras may even have a bit of an advantage here, because they have a built-in macro feature, as opposed to buying a macro lens for an SLR.
Macro Mode: Usually represented by a flower icon on your camera, for taking detailed shots of subjects close to the lens. You can put your camera right near the food! However, try not to smear your lens with sauce or oil, as this may be tricky to clean.
Focus on what makes the food appealing:
- Aroma (okay, you can’t capture this. Yet. But catch rising steam off hot food and soup!)
Try to take a different angle to your food than simply looking at it top-down and snapping a cold and upappetizing shot with harsh white flash.
Use natural light and low angles to your advantage. Make the food the star. Move it around the table, find the best surroundings, hold it up! Experiment!
-Again, don’t put camera IN food.
-If taking pictures of a dish that everyone is waiting to try, be quick!
-Do not take pictures of other people’s food (at a different table)
-Pictures with one bite out of the food are cute. (Cake, cookie) Three or more bites is disgusting.
-Unless people ask you to take their picture with the food, try to avoid photographing people as they eat. They will hate you. Forever.
